Mirror adjustment area for trucks
Gheeraert Transport's premises (near to the E40 motorway, exit road 7 - Loppem) has a mirror adjustment area. This is where lorry drivers can correctly adjust their mirrors. By correctly adjusting their mirrors, lorry drivers not only reduce the size of the blind spot, but also the chance of a blind spot crash.
The blind spot mirror
Blind spot mirrors have been compulsory for a number of years. They make it easier for drivers to see the area around the lorry and improve safety for other road users. Despite the legal requirement to fit a blind spot mirror to lorries, many lethal blind spot crashes unfortunately happen every year in Belgium.
This is why the Flanders government has invested in setting up mirror adjustment areas. These are areas where lorry drivers can simply and correctly adjust their mirrors.
What is a mirror adjustment area?
A mirror adjustment area has a tool for showing the required viewing angles of mirrors. This can be done, for example, by means of zones marked on a carpark.
An instruction sign allows drivers to see which zone should be visible in which mirror. This adjustment is determined individually and depends on the height, seating position and experience of the driver. Correctly adjusted mirrors make driving easier and can literally save lives. To clarify, employers are not responsible for the correct adjustment of mirrors. This is the responsibility of drivers, just as in a car.
